Brick steps at the back door

Two sets of brick steps, capped in stone, so the customers can step straight out of their new extension.

  • Brick built up to the door, levelled as it went
  • Stone caps laid on top
  • Second step at the side door

Lay, level, tap, repeat.

We use the same method on every job. Here's how a patio goes down.

  1. Digging out a foundation with a spade, a wheelbarrow beside it01

    Dig out

The old patio, soil or turf comes out and the foundation is dug.

    Watch it dug out
  2. Compacting Type 1 stone with a plate compactor02

    Build the base

Type 1 goes in and is compacted with the plate before a single slab is laid.

    Watch the base go in
  3. Bedding a large porcelain slab and tapping it level with a mallet beside spirit levels03

    Lay and level

Each slab is bedded, checked with the level and tapped down. Then the next.

    Watch a 600 × 900 go down
  4. An angle grinder fitted with a porcelain cutting disc04

    Cut to fit

Edges, drains, walls and corners are cut last, slowly, with the grinder.

    Watch a curved cut
  5. Brushing grout across porcelain slabs05

    Grout and finish

Joints are filled with a grout that suits the slab. Then borders, planting or turf.

    Watch a patio grouted

Every step here is a real clip from a real job on Instagram.
